One Minute Insights
I recently read The One Minute Entrepreneur by Ken Blanchard, Don Hutson and Ethan Willis. The way it was written is unusual for a business related book. It’s written as a story. It starts out when the young boy is a senior in high school and follows him through his life. It points out what he does right and not so right. Below are some of the things he learned along the way. Some of them seem rather simplistic and they are as long as you’re following them. Yes, they are business related, but most apply to life in general, too.
1. If you associate with value-driven yet successful people, you can’t help but improve yourself.
2. Keep a notebook of the wisdom you read, hear and learn, and distill that learning into One
Minute Insights.
3. You can get what you want in life if you help other people get what they want.
4. Take care of your numbers and your numbers will take care of you.
5. Four things to remember to be a successful entrepreneur:
a. sales have to exceed expenses
b. collect your bills
c. take care of your customers
d. take care of your people
6. Too many people dream too small. Remember, you’ll never achieve more than you think you
can. So create a big dream.
7. Profit is the applause you get for taking care of your customers and creating a motivating
environment for your people.
8. Creating legendary service starts with an image of what kind of experience you want your
customers to have.
9. An important part of creating raving fan service is a question of listening to customers and
then taking action on what you hear.
10. Once you have a clear picture of the experience you want your customers to have – an
experience that will satisfy them, delight them, and put smiles on their faces – you have to
figure out how to get your people excited about delivering that experience plus a little bit
more.
11. There are two kinds of people in life: ducks and eagles. Ducks act like victims. Too many of
us act like ducks in life. Eagles, on the other hand, take initiative and soar above the crowd.
Which do you want to be?
12. As a manager or coach, you become the cheerleader and supporter of good performance by
your people or clients. What it really is about is helping, cheerleading and supporting their
efforts.
13. Effective leadership is about treating people the right way by providing the direction and
encouragement they need to be their best.
14. Long-term success is about more than making tomorrow’s numbers.
15. Everything you are and possess today, good or bad, will pass down to those who come after
you – not only the monetary stuff, but also your beliefs and philosophy. The legacy you leave
is the legacy you live.
16. Being an entrepreneur is about committing to success one step at a time.
